Sweet Links…Cinco de Mayo, Hugh Grant on his baby girl, Photographs of Kids, SAHDs, interrupt-itis, Gellar expecting #2, Breastfeeding Tips, Birth Story

Happy Saturday!

And Cinco de Mayo. Did you celebrate? I know it isn’t really a real holiday but it was still nice to see friends and family. And have a very refreshing margarita while watching the kids do their thing, play with rocks and get messy. Life is sweet.

Also sweet, I just had a random person tell me they thought my art was amazing, this one in particular. That sort of made my night. The Edge of the Forest - LIMITED EDITION Print of an abstract acryclic painting.

Yay for feeling nice. I see this painting every day in my house and it makes me happy. I’m glad someone else likes it too.

Anyway, check out these interesting articles that I found time to read and share with you because they were so good! Want more? Click here to check out my other recent Sweet Links posts.

And your birth story of the day…

When A Birth Teacher Gives Birth – Birth Story - Mama Birth

You know, I really prefer homebirth stories because I don’t like reading about hospital protocol or rude docs or nurses but this one wasn’t bad. I like Mama Birth’s intro to it as well.
“I thought it was really interesting to read a birth story from a birth teacher.  I always feel some performance anxiety during my pregnancies- like if I don’t have a natural birth or if I beg for an epidural or for somebody to make it all better, then I will get kicked out of the crunchy- wunchy club.
Alas- I HAVE wanted an epidural and nobody kicked me out of that imaginary club.

So, enjoy this birth story, it has lots of interesting lessons and thoughts from a somewhat different perspective.”

Let’s throw in a couple more articles I read about birth & loss today while I’m at it…

OK! Enough. Goodnight!

It is already almost Friday? What?! Where did this week go? We are moving on Saturday and I have not packed a box. I am terrible. I’ve had Elimination Communication on the brain, playdates over, family in town…le sigh. This one is so, so true. It will make you laugh – read it!

Excerpt -
I saw red when I read a letter to an advice column from a childless woman who suspects her friend is lying about being busy all day.
“Motherhood isn’t a chain of wondrous little moments strung together in one perfectly orchestrated slide show. It’s dirty and scary and beautiful and hard and miraculous and exhausting and thankless and joyful and frustrating all at once. It’s everything. Anyone who claims that motherhood is only the good stuff is simply in denial (or she’s on some serious drugs). Admitting that this job isn’t always easy doesn’t make somebody a bad mother. At least, it shouldn’t.”
Really, this is what being a stay at home mom means:

I also just saw this funny-but-true comment in People’s piece, James Van Der Beek’s Free Time Is a ‘Thing of the Past.’ I think I finally think this guy is OK.

“It’s a lot of work,” Van Der Beek, 35, told PEOPLE on Tuesday. “With one [child], you get a lot more down time. With two, down time becomes a thing of the past.”
Yes. Oh man. Yes.
Have you seen Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23? It is sorta funny. Watch the first two episodes on Hulu. It premieres Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.

KellyMom.com via Attachment Parenting International - Do you and your spouse have different parenting styles? How do you handle it? “Our perceptions of kids’ behavior and our reactions to it are based on past experience. Since spouses have different past experiences, we don’t start out in the same place as parents.”

Mamas to be Reese WitherspoonMolly Sims, and Alessandra Ambrósio dress up their bumps in chic frocks in beautiful shades of pink and red.

Alicia Silverstone attracted quite a bit of attention when she posted a video of herself feeding her 11-month-old son Bear Blu mouth-to-mouth.

Despite the fallout since her March video, the actress maintains that there’s nothing wrong with her mealtime method. “People have been feeding their kids that way for thousands for years. It’s a weaning process.”

I think she’s not crazy. You?

Ok, enough for today. I’m out!

Happy Sunday!

What a beautiful day! Sunny, blue skies, cool breeze…the sort of day that makes me happy I’m living in the Bay Area and not in Texas. I am sad that it is the last day of the weekend but what can you do? I’m giving coconut oil a whirl today for the first time. I finally found some at Trader Joe’s and the kitchen smells delish!

Did anyone else watch Up All Night’s newest episode, Letting Go, and feel sorta sad when she casually mentioned her c-section in a conversation to her husband and gave him her vicodin from the surgery? I know that finding a way to give him drugs that they just had laying around the house was probably why they put a c-section in the story, rather than a vaginal birth, but still. Why did they have to make her a c-section mama? They missed an amazing opportunity to show how beautiful birth can be, for Regan to share an empowering birth story with a nation that thinks surgical birth is OK!

Did you see the latest news on how labors are longer now than decades past? And they’re implicating c-sections for that?

Sigh. Here are some interesting posts worth reading. Want more? Click here to check out my other recent Sweet Links posts.

Babies Take Longer To Come Out Than They Did In Grandma’s Day – NPR

Fifty years ago, the typical first-time mother in the U.S. took about four hours to give birth. These days, women labor about 6 1/2 hours.

“The typical first-time mother takes 6 1/2 hours to give birth these days. Her counterpart 50 years ago labored for barely four hours.

That’s the striking conclusion of a new federal study that compared nearly 140,000 births from two time periods.

One big implication: Today’s obstetricians may be rushing to do cesarean sections too soon because they’re using an out-of-date yardstick for how long a “normal” labor should take.”

My favorite part is the end, where they suggest that today’s routine practices “may need to be thoughtfully reconsidered.” More at NPR.

Sweet Links…Hot Moms Special! Jessica Alba, Michelle Obama, Miranda Kerr, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Beyoncé, & Charlize Theron

Love that dress. And look at those sweet sisters.

What do you think about leopard pants? They seem to like ‘em on Daily Mail. But I’m not so sure.

Wild thing! Miranda Kerr is chic in bright blue leopard-print jeans

Wild thing: Miranda Kerr returns to he New York apartment after a trip to the spa wearing bright blue leopard-print jeans

And when is Maggie’s due date again? She seems like such a chill mom. I can’t wait to see her new baby.

Any day now? Pregnant Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is said to be due to give birth soon, was spotted cradling her rather large baby bump in New York today

Also just saw Beyonce on Daily Mail too with her little girl. She does look like a happy new mom. I’m not a fan of the Baby Bjorn though. Get that mama an Ergo carrier, stat! And I saw some little gold baby shoes this weekend that I was really tempted to buy for my pre-walker but I know they are just for me, not for her. So I resisted. Why cramp her little feet with shoes when they don’t do any good? Well, except for a little wind protection.

And last but not least, Michelle Obama’s. Love her glow, love that dress!

Happy Thursday!

I ready for the weekend again. I guess it has been a fairly easy week but there is nothing like being able to have a little me-time with the husband home to watch the girls for an hour. We are still waiting to hear back about the new apartment we applied for in Berkeley. My next family visit is about a month away. Will we have to move before then or after then? Also, I’ve noticed that the less time I spend blogging, the cleaner the house looks and the more I feed myself. Who knew??! I know, I know. But I was pretty addicted for a while there but I’m scaling it back a bit. Here are some interesting posts that are worth reading. Want more? Oh. And I almost forgot. Today is Happy International Women’s Day! The 101st, actually.

Yet women do 2/3 of the world’s work, earn 10% of the income, and own 1% of the land.

Have you seen this Gaga parody on suffrage? It made me cry, I’m not going to lie, and I never thought I’d cry to a Lady Gaga song. I can’t believe women in the United States have been voting for less than a hundred years. And it took nearly 70 years of fighting to get it. Fighting for our rights, all of them, is a tough business. When will we actually be treated equally? When will be free of gender discrimination and stereotypes, have equal pay, equal educational opportunities, equal access to healthcare, and be able to nurse our babies without harassment?

FOR LYRICS GO TO http://www.soomopublishing.com/suffrageBad Romance: Women’s Suffrage is a parody music video paying homage to Alice Paul and the generations of brave women who joined together in the fight to pass the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote in 1920.

In 2010, Soomo Publishing launched a parody music video called Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZfRaWAtBVg]. The result was a viral hit and remains a popular teaching resource for history teachers and political science professors across the United States. The response was so overwhelming that Soomo decided to follow it up with Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage.

67.2% Vaginal Birth Rate- Proof That Female Bodies Still Work

Another parenting hot button: Immunizations. Where do you stand? All for 100% of them? Delayed? Against? I just came across this little post and thought I’d share.

“…over a decade ago, in a statement to the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee, as executive director of AAPS, Jane Orient, M.D. wrote:
For most children, the risk of a serious vaccine reaction may be 100 times greater than the risk of hepatitis B. Overall, the incidence of hepatitis B in the U.S. is currently about 4 per 100,000. The risk for most young children is far less; hepatitis B is heavily concentrated in groups at high risk due to occupation, sexual promiscuity, or drug abuse. VAERS contains 25,000 reports related to hepatitis B vaccine, about one-third of which were serious enough to lead to an emergency room visit, hospitalization, or death. It is often assumed that only 10% of reactions are reported. (This committee has heard testimony about persons being actively discouraged from reporting, even if they are aware of the reporting system.) Thus, if there have been some 80,000 serious adverse reactions associated with 20 million doses of vaccine, the risk is about 4 in 1000….” Read the whole story.

Back to other parenting decisions and tips.

Their short list?

1. There’s no such thing as a perfect birth.
2. Brace yourself for hormonal moments.
3. It’s OK to ask for help.
4. You might not “bond” at first.
5. Loosen up and PLAY!
6. Read to your baby.
7. Don’t blink

What do you think? What would you add?

Facebook Breastfeeding Censorship News:
